My name is Alex and I am a writer who decided to head off on adventures never-ending, leaving my home in Scotland on the eve of my 40th birthday, and seeing the sun rise as I passed high above the jungles of Burma.

Since then, I’ve lived in a number of places, always keen to find new things to add to my notebook, whether new experiences, cultures different to my own, new-to-me foods, and especially the unceasing wonders of nature.
I am increasingly sharing posts regarding travel, whether personal stories, destination ideas, packing and planning advice and tips, or how to head off on adventures of your own. From October 2022, this shall be the primary focus of Not A Travel Writer. To read more about this, click here.
Prior to this date, I have shared all manner of things on this site, as I do in my free newsletter (click for an archive of previous copies). Signing up is the best way to keep in touch, and to see what is new, where I am, what I have seen, and what I am working on. There’s no spam, just words and photos from me, along with occasional give-aways, sales, and review copies. It goes out at least once a month, sometimes more, especially when I have new releases to talk about or exciting things to share.
From October 2022, I shall also be sending a monthly link to a password-protected page on my site, with details of statistics, analytics, income, facts and figures, showing the growth (hopefully!) of Not A Travel Writer and perhaps providing some inspiration along the way.
My creative journey is moving towards an increased volume of fiction, which was always the plan but, like so many things, it takes time.
This fiction is principally divided between two series of works, The Lesser Evil, and The Greater Good. As you can probably tell, these are linked through themes and ideas. I like to sneak Big Ideas into my stories, wrapping important messages within a safe blanket of engaging story, addictive plot, and memorable, real characters.
The Lesser Evil is a series of fantasy novellas, stories, and novels, located within a world full of dangers, strange creatures, sudden violence and, very rarely, true magics.
By contrast, The Greater Good is set within our world, roughly at the time you are reading this. However, it is crucial to note that this doesn’t mean there is no danger, strange creatures, sudden violence or true magics. There are.

I also write about other things which interest me, whether the nature I am lucky enough to observe, the time I get to spend out in wilder places, or the places I travel through and live in. My current home base is in the French Alps, a place full of wildlife and mountains, water, and trees. I am currently updating my old posts from previous incarnations of this and other sites — when this is complete, I shall share an index of these, as they cover a wide range of topics, from trees to ghosts, Portugal to Laos, and beetles to wolves.
At times, I also share news of what I have read, watched, or listened to. Sometimes I might include affiliate links, whether to these things I have enjoyed, or to items I use to help me travel, or get closer to nature, for example. You can read more about this and my Privacy Policy here.
